Hull Stress Monitoring System

Development and implementation of a ‘Hull Stress Monitoring System’ for the Royal New Zealand Navy:

  • Reduction in the risk of extreme hull loading
  • Analysis of raw data to present time trends of hull stress and fatigue
  • Calculation of the probability and predicted time to reach alarm thresholds
  • Simple, intuitive user interface
  • Export of raw and statistical data to excel or text format

The permanent installation of strain gauges and accelerometers RNZN Ships allowed real time data to be available for safety critical decision making. Strain gauges monitored stress in the ships structure and accelerometers monitored the ships motion.
